MEXT Scholarship 2027 in Japan (Embassy Track – Fully Funded)

Offered by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan

Closed 31 May 2026

Fully funded scholarship from Japanese Government (MEXT) in Japan. Check the deadline and eligibility on the official page before applying.

A scholarship offered by Japanese Government (MEXT) in Japan.

The organiser describes this as fully funded. On this site that means tuition and accommodation are recorded as covered; flights are left as not stated until we have confirmed them, because they vary between programmes that use the same phrase. This is aimed at applicants at Master's level.

Before you apply

Open the official page and confirm three things: that the deadline still stands, that you meet the eligibility criteria as they are written there, and what documents you will need. Applications fail more often on a missing document than on a weak candidate.

Every detail here is checked against the organisation's own page, and that page is the authority: deadlines move, eligibility is rewritten, and programmes are withdrawn without announcement. Confirm before you apply.

How to apply

On the embassy track, applications go to the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your own country — never directly to MEXT in Japan, which will not process them. Each embassy publishes its own schedule and documents, so the timetable differs by country.

Screening runs in two stages: a written examination and interview at the embassy, then a second screening in Japan by MEXT and the universities for candidates the embassy recommends.

What you will need

  • Application form from your local Japanese embassy
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Certificate of health
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Field of study and research programme plan

Eligibility notes

Open to nationals of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan. Application procedures and deadlines are set country by country.
